VIJAYAWADA: Floods continued to batter Krishna district on Sunday, with deaths either directly due to floods or because of the prevailing cold conditions being reported from several parts of the district.
The unofficial cumulative death toll was put at 14, while officials confirmed that only two persons – a woman due to collapse of a wall and a teenage boy due to electrocution – died in the city on Sunday. Two more youths were feared drowned in the overflowing Budameru that submerged several localities in its vicinity, thoughofficials declined to confirm it.
Some relief
Though there was some relief from the incessant rainfall during the day – with the district receiving an average of only 4.7 mm of rainfall from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. – streams like Munneru, Musi and Palair were on spate on account of large inflows from the upper reaches in Warangal, Nalgonda and Khammam districts.
Traffic between Vijayawada and Hyderabad came to a grinding halt at Keesara, when Munneru started overflowing National Highway-9 since the early hours of Sunday.
